Basic Photography -- The Basics

Classes where you'll learn the basics of photography beginning with metering, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This class is designed for digital SLR, mirrorless, and hybrid cameras. Pre-class information will be sent to each student. Online students will need to use their computer's camera. Click the link below to register.

Master Classes

You're comfortable with the basics of photography. Now it's time to push your skill level a bit higher.
Master Classes are a series of four online classes. During those classes, we'll explore the topic from basic to complex.
Between each class you'll photograph a series of assignments. The photos from those assignments will be shared in the next class where we'll discuss and critique.

Intentional Camera Movement

For years, photographers have been moving the camera during an exposure to create interesting photos. Motion Blurs or Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) are a skill that should be added to your tool chest. This class also shows you have to blend a blurred image with a still image in Photoshop Layers

Prairie Photography

In person, outdoor event where we explore the Katy Prairie with our cameras. Walk about a mile looking for birds, butterlies, dragonflies, wildflowers, and critters on the prairie.

Camera with a lens in the 100-400mm range. Maybe a wide angle lens. Tripod not needed.

No unaccompanied minors, please.

Which Lens Should I Use?

This is such a common question in the field. Lenses are tools and photographers should treat them as such. The choice between a 10mm lens and 300mm lens is no different than a carpenter using a hammer or a rubber mallet. Each is a tool. Learn about lenses, lens construction, bokeh, and more. Plus see examples. Also, when you should rent a lens and when you should buy a lens.

Processing Tips Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom/Elements

Designed for students who have attended my Introduction to Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom/Elements class or watched my video tutorials on YouTube and are ready for more. This class is more in-depth and assumes a basic understanding of Adobe Camera Raw/ Lightroom/Elements. We'll concentrate on the sliders in Adobe Camera Raw and the Develop module in Lightroom. Both process images in much the same way. When to use specific sliders will be explored in more detail including tips on sharpening, local adjustments, and much more. Alternative Processing

Let's explore some different ways of processing our photos. Isolate one color, add a texture, convert to black-and-white, and more.

This class will use Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw (same as Lightroom), Nik, and Skylum to give you alternative processing ideas.

Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw, or Lightroom is helpful. I offer classes in all. Not mandatory but helpful.

Using Your Flash -- The Basics

Learn how to use your flash on your camera in a fun class that will use subject in low light. Discover why your photos taken with flash are washed-out or under-exposed. Bring digital camera and flash to class plus your flash manual. Class is designed for cameras that have hot shoes for mounting auxillary flashes. Night Photography

Live class on the Katy Prairie west of Houston. We'll photograph the sunset, moon rise, and then the stars. learn how to get a proper exposure at night. Tripod and wide-angle lens are a must. Minimal walking and some stairs. Non-photographer traveling companions welcome.

Please have a basic understanding of your camera to get the maximum benefits from this class. Consider taking my Basic Photography class before this class.
